Andy Muschietti explains It: Welcome to Derry Episode 7

Episode 7 of It: Welcome to Derry has drawn considerable attention for its depiction of the Black Spot tragedy. Andy Muschietti has now shared creative details about bringing Episode 7 to screens.

Speaking to Variety, Muschietti explained that the Black Spot has always carried significant weight within the interludes that inspired the structure of the series. The director added, “Since we’re basing the show on the interludes, we really wanted to show the events of the Black Spot and use it as a guideline.”

Muschietti noted that the scene serves as a “dramatic low point,” adding that it pushes the characters toward a major turning point. He said, “It is a guideline that leads our characters towards a catastrophic conclusion, or, if not a conclusion, a big pivotal point in the story.”

Muschietti also reflected on what he hopes viewers will take away from the scene. According to him, “We shot this in a very visceral way. It’s a very first-person experience. We wanted to get the audience to feel what being trapped in this place would be like.” The director also addressed the thematic message behind the Black Spot. He explained that the scene is meant to highlight how real human actions shape the darkest events in the story.

Muschietti said, “Thematically, we wanted to convey the idea that the worst things that happen in this world are often caused by us humans and that we are capable of inflicting pain and hate and horror in each other, just as much or more than the monster is.”
