Major Video Game Movie Could Join ‘Mario Cinematic Universe’

Whispers of a new addition to a rapidly expanding cinematic world have begun to circulate. A recent online scoop hints at a major video game franchise potentially joining an interconnected film universe rooted in one of gaming’s most recognizable brands. While details remain limited, the timing and implications of the development are drawing increased attention.

Universal likely to be securing rights to a Metroid movie

According to insider MyTimeToShineHello (MTTSH), Universal is attempting to secure the rights for a Metroid movie to integrate into their developing “Mario Cinematic Universe.” On November 28, 2025, MTTSH posted on X: “SCOOP: Universal is trying to secure the rights for a Metroid movie to add it to their planned ‘Mario Cinematic Universe.’”

This marks the first reported attempt to link Metroid to a larger cinematic Nintendo universe in nearly two decades of development silence.

Lion Rock Productions began developing a Metroid film in the early 2000s with John Woo attached to direct and multiple producers overseeing the project. The planned storyline focused on Samus Aran and her early battles with Metroids and Mother Brain. The project ended in 2007 after creative disagreements. Producer Brad Foxhoven said Nintendo felt uncomfortable allowing outside studios to define Samus’s backstory.

Multiple figures have since expressed interest in adapting Metroid. Actress Ronda Rousey said, “I’ve always wanted to be Samus. That would be b—–” (via Gamespot). Director Jordon Vogt-Roberts stated, “I have a pitch for a Metroid movie. They’ll never let me. It’s too crazy.”

Brie Larson publicly expressed interest in playing Samus, tweeting, “I want to make that movie.” Seth Rogen, Chris Pratt, and Charlie Day have also voiced support for a Metroid entry in a potential Nintendo cinematic universe. Director Neill Blomkamp replied “yes” in April 2023 when asked if he was interested in making a Metroid film.
