Netflix is developing Grim, an adult animated series based on the Boom! Studios comic books by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano, with Al Gough and Miles Millar executive producing alongside Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Deadline reported that the project follows Jessica Harrow, a newly recruited Reaper responsible for transporting souls to the afterlife. It also noted that she has no memory of her death or prior life, a gap that pushes her deeper into the hidden architecture of the afterlife.
Gough and Millar oversee the series through Millar/Gough Ink with Aaron Schmidt and Yuh Nelson. Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin executive produce for Boom! Studios, while Mette Norkjaer, Phillips, and Flaviano serve as co-executive producers. Grim debuted in 2022 as one of Boom! Studios’ highest-selling launches and concludes its 25-issue run this month. Boom! Studios, founded in 2005, has several comics adapted for television, including Butterfly starring Daniel Dae Kim.
Gough and Millar’s television work includes Wednesday, whose two seasons rank among Netflix’s most-watched English-language series. Their additional credits include Smallville, Into the Badlands, and The Shannara Chronicles. Their feature projects include Spider-Man 2, Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Jennifer Yuh Nelson directs and executive produces alongside the duo. Her work includes multiple episodes of Love, Death + Robots, and she previously served as Head of Story on Kung Fu Panda before directing Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3. She became the first woman to solely direct a major studio animated feature and earned an Academy Award nomination for Kung Fu Panda 2.
