It: Welcome to Derry’s Batman, Flash & DC Easter Eggs You May Have Missed

It: Welcome to Derry‘s series premiere includes multiple DC Easter eggs and references. Both DC and It franchise projects are developed by Warner Bros. Further, Andy Muschietti, who previously helmed the two It movies and 2023’s The Flash, directed the pilot episode. All this has led to speculations that these references might have a deeper meaning than what meets the eye.

Did you catch It: Welcome to Derry Episode 1’s DC Easter eggs?

It: Welcome to Derry Episode 1 is riddled with several DC Easter eggs and references. The horror series premiered on HBO on October 26, 2025.

One of the most prominent references in It: Welcome to Derry premiere involves Batman and Detective Comics. Mikkal Karim-Fidler’s Teddy Uris reads a comic book after a confrontation with his father, and this particular comic book happens to be Detective Comics #298 from writer Bill Finger and artist Sheldon Moldoff. Given that Muschietti was announced as the director of the upcoming DC Universe feature, The Brave and the Bold, the inclusion of this specific comic book may be a nod to that.

That issue marks the first appearance of Matt Hagen’s Clayface in comics. This character will appear in the upcoming DCU feature Clayface, and will be played by Tom Rhys Harries. Notably, hours before the episode premiered, DCU co-head James Gunn took to social media to celebrate the character’s anniversary and shared the cover image of the same issue. “Happy Anniversary to the perennially misunderstood villain, Clayface,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait for you to see @tomrhysharries bring him to life on the big screen.”

The episode also includes a scene in which Teddy is reading Flash #123 – The Flash of Two Worlds at the dinner table. Created by writer Gardner Fox with artist Carmine Infantino, this issue is as iconic as Detective Comics #298. Both came out in 1961. Accordingly, it makes sense that they will appear in It: Welcome to Derry, which takes place in 1962. Another scene includes a reference to another DC hero, the Atom.

It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 will stream on HBO Max on October 31, 2025, before airing on HBO on November 2. The remaining episodes will air weekly on HBO.
