Darkseid’s DCU Debut Gets Unsurprising Answer

DCU fans have eagerly been waiting to find out about the whereabouts of Darkseid, and if James Gunn‘s recent comments are anything to go by, they might have to wait for a while longer before the villain appears in the universe. In a recent discussion, the veteran filmmaker opened up about the debut of DC’s answer to Marvel’s Thanos in the DCU, confirming that the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips won’t be making his big-screen debut anytime soon.

James Gunn thinks using Darkseid as the DCU’s ‘big bad right now’ may not work

During his recent interview with New Rockstars‘ Erik Voss, Gunn shed light on how similar the DCU’s Salvation planet arc, introduced in the Peacemaker Season 2 finale, would be to its comic book counterpart, simply stating, “Don’t expect too much.”

In the pages of DC’s Salvation Run comics, Darkseid’s right-hand man, DeSaad, uses the titular planet as a training ground to prepare his army of parademons. While the introduction of Planet Salvation prompted many fans to think that the introduction of the powerful New God may be on the horizon, Gunn effectively shot down such ideas by stating that he is only leveraging the concept of Salvation.

“I liked the idea of supervillains building a society in this other dimension. And I liked the way that it was a very practical way that Amanda Waller and Rick Flag Jr., in that instance, were trying to deal with the problem of meta-humans who continuously escaped from prison in a way that I think a fed-up government might,” Gunn said of Salvation in the DCU.

Later in the interview, Gunn explained why using Darkseid as the DCU’s primary antagonist may not be such a good idea for now, citing two major reasons behind his thinking. “There are aspects of Darkseid and Thanos, [who] are obviously very similar. They look very similar. Using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing, for a lot of reasons: because Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way. And because [of] Thanos in Marvel,” the DC Studios co-CEO added.

As such, it remains unclear as to when fans will be able to see the first theatrical appearance of one of the most iconic villains in the DC universe.
