While speaking to TVLine, Henrie, who also serves as an executive producer on the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series, disclosed that he always knew about the ultimate fate of Selena Gomez’s Alex in the second season.

“I knew where we were going this season, and I had to bite my lip because I knew that everyone was going to freak out. For seven months, I was just waiting for the moment [the cast] got to read the script with the ending,” the How I Met Your Mother alum said.

Notably, in the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2 finale, viewers learn that Billie is actually the daughter of Gomez’s Alex Russo. With Lord Morsus hot on her daughter’s tail, Alex decides to bring Billie to WizTech and uses her magical powers to erase everyone’s memory of Billie to keep her safe. However, when Morsus finally catches up to the Russos, Alex sacrifices herself as she pushes the dark wizard into a portal, saving her family.

According to Henrie, the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place cast broke down while reading the script for the Season 2 finale due to what happens to Alex. “When we finally read it, everyone cried at the table read with all the executives and all the different folks that work on the show. Everyone was just deeply moved and touched. It was exactly what I had hoped for,” he explained.

Janice LeAnn Brown also recalled a similar reaction while reading the script. The 15-year-old actress shared, “As we were reading it, Alkaio [Thiele] looked over to me and he said, ‘Are you crying?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, man, I’m crying. This is emotional!’ It was hitting me!”
