Solar Opposites co-creator Mike McMahan has explained why the team behind the series has decided to end it with Season 6. In a recent interview, the comedy writer shared his views regarding the forthcoming end of the Annie Awards-nominated show and why he decided not to move ahead with Solar Opposites Season 7.
Why is Solar Opposites ending before Season 7?
While speaking with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con, Mike McMahan admitted that he did have enough material to extend Solar Opposites beyond Season 6. Nevertheless, with McMahan and his crewmates deeming the sixth edition to be a fitting end for the animated sitcom, they ultimately decided to close the door on a potential seventh season.
“I mean, six seasons is kind of a miracle to get,” the seasoned producer noted. He then added, “We could keep making the show, and you’ll see that this season feels like this is our Fellowship of the Ring. It’s the end of the first book. We could keep going, but it’s a really satisfying ending. We’ve got this long-running story about these little people in a wall terrarium of one of the aliens that we do some awesome stuff this season with.”
McMahan further provided context as to what fans can expect from Solar Opposites Season 6 while explaining why the edition would serve as a suitable ending to the sci-fi franchise. “You’ve also been watching this alien couple, this alien family, evolve across the series to really fall in love and get married. And this season finally feels like they’re married, and that’s not a question anymore,” McMahan said.
Considering the comments made by the Star Trek: Lower Decks showrunner, it is possible that Solar Opposites may continue after Season 6 in the future. Nevertheless, the iconic sitcom seems to have reached the end of its streaming road, at least for the time being.
