James Gunn Reveals When Exactly Batman Will Debut in DCU After Superman

As fans continue to wait for more updates regarding Batman’s appearance in the revamped DCU, Superman director James Gunn has come out to disclose when the Caped Crusader will make his debut. While answering fan queries on social media, as he does on a regular basis, the renowned filmmaker provided a definitive answer about the Dark Knight’s first big-screen appearance in his cinematic universe.

James Gunn confirms Batman will not debut before The Brave and the Bold

During a recent interaction on social media, the Guardians of the Galaxy director reaffirmed that Batman will make his DCU debut with The Brave and the Bold.

James Gunn recently took to Threads to promote his appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Podcast, where he discussed the upcoming Superman flick, along with his future plans for the DCU. In the comments section of this Threads post, one user asked him about Batman’s debut, writing, “Is it still the plan for BaTB (The Brave and the Bold) to be the live-action introduction to the DCU Batman?”

Without beating around the bush, the DC Studios co-CEO replied with a simple, “Yes.” While Gunn’s response confirmed the first big-screen DCU project that will feature Bruce Wayne, it also relayed that fans should not expect to see a cameo from Batman in any theatrical outing before The Brave and the Bold. As such, Batman should also miss out on an appearance in the Tom Rhys-led Clayface movie, despite the character primarily being known as a Batman villain.

James Gunn has yet to share any details on the release schedule of The Brave and the Bold. However, he confirmed in a recent interview that “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally.” He also added that he is presently working with “the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So, outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.”

In the meantime, the DCU’s first entry, Superman, comes out in theaters on July 11, 2025.
