Andor Season 2 Didn’t Feature Major Rogue One Character for a Good Reason

Andor showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy has opened up about why Felicity Jones and the rest of the Rogue One cast did not cameo in the second and final season of the Star Wars show.

Ahead of the release of the final batch of Andor Season 2 episodes, Star Wars fans began to wonder just how close the show would get to syncing up with the start of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and if any characters from the 2016 movie would appear. Since Jones has stated in the past that she signed a multi-film deal for Star Wars, many fans hoped that she would return as Jyn Erso in Andor Season 2.

While Jones ultimately didn’t return as Jyn, it wasn’t for a lack of trying, as Gilroy revealed during a recent interview with Backstory Magazine (via Screen Rant) that he thought about bringing the Rogue One character back, but opted against it because there was no reason for her to appear.

Why didn’t Jyn Erso appear in Andor Season 2?

“When I was building season 2 after season 1, I was looking at everything. Felicity is just a fantastic actor and a really great person, and I know how much love there is for her online and how many people were begging for that to happen. If I could have thought of a way that didn’t tip everything upside down, I don’t think Lucasfilm would have had a problem,” Gilroy explained. “But I could never . . . once you start it, what do you do with it? You got to go all the way. Is she some connection to Saw, and then you get into that, but then you go back, and what does he say in Rogue One? It just never pulled together.”

Gilroy expanded on his reasoning for not including any Rogue One cameos in Andor Season 2 during a chat with Entertainment Weekly, sharing how he though “if people didn’t absolutely have to be there, they shouldn’t. And it would’ve been lame to bring Jyn back as a cameo. That would’ve been really disrespectful in a way. I’d rather honor Rogue and keep it straight.”

Other Rogue One characters that Gilroy revealed he briefly flirted with bringing back for Andor Season 2 were the informant Tivic and Jyn’s father, Galen Erso, played by Danny Mays and Mads Mikkelsen, respectively.

Both seasons of Andor and Rogue One are available to stream on Disney+.
