David Jonsson’s casting as the next Black Panther has generated an enthusiastic response from fans online. Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler announced the news at Comic-Con 2026. The British actor will take on the role of Prince T’Challa’s adult version. He is the son of Chadwick Boseman’s character and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia.
Kevin Feige revealed that Coogler discovered Jonsson months before any formal search began. Coogler called Feige after a secret hotel meeting with the actor. “He’s the guy, he’s the guy, I felt it. I felt it in my soul. He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther,” Coogler told Feige. The Marvel Studios president confirmed they had kept the casting secret for roughly six months (via Empire).
Fans on social media praised Jonsson’s acting talent and growing filmography. One user highlighted his previous work, writing, “Good casting I really liked his acting in Romulus and The Long Walk movie.” Jonsson has earned recognition through standout roles in Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, and Industry.

Coogler had identified Jonsson while still working on his film Sinners. The director’s passion for the casting left a strong impression on the Marvel Studios team.
Black Panther III is set to release on December 15, 2028, one year after Avengers: Secret Wars. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke appeared on stage alongside Jonsson during the Comic-Con reveal. Jonsson received a rapturous reception from the Hall H crowd at the event.
