Scarlett Johansson believes that Avengers: Endgame should have at least received a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. The movie came out in 2019 and served as a concluding chapter for several storylines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Johansson reprised her role as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow in the movie. While her character was killed in Endgame, Johansson headlined the cast of 2021’s Black Widow, which took place before the events of Avengers 4.

Johansson wondered why 2019’s Avengers: Endgame didn’t receive considerable award recognition at the Oscars during a recent interview with Vanity Fair and observed that a movie’s commercial possibilities should not impact how the Academy responded to it. According to the actress, Endgame should have at least received a Best Picture nod at the Oscars. She stated, “How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar? It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”
Notably, the only nomination that Endgame received at the 92nd Academy Awards was for Best Visual Effects, which was eventually won by the war drama 1917. The Best Picture nominees of that year were 1917, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Parasite, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, and Marriage Story, with Parasite being the eventual winner.
As of 2025, the only MCU movie to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination is Black Panther (2018).
Although Endgame didn’t win an Oscar, it did score multiple Saturn Awards, several People’s Choice Awards, an Annie Award, a Lumiere Award, and more. Further, as Johansson indicates, Endgame became the second highest-grossing movie of all time, only behind James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). It currently has a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 552 reviews and a score of 78 out of 100 on Metacritic after 57 critics’ reviews, denoting a generally favorable response.
