The Flash’s Grant Gustin Reveals Arrowverse Storyline He Hated

Even Grant Gustin, the lead of The Flash, wasn’t always happy with the storylines the writers came up with for the Arrowverse show.

After making his debut as Barry Allen in a two-part episode of ArrowThe CW’s initially grounded take on the Green Arrow mythos — Gustin headlined the spin-off series The Flash, which ran for 9 seasons and 184 episodes on the network from 2014 to 2023. While the first few seasons were well-received by critics and fans, reception towards the later seasons was more negative, with many criticizing some of the storylines that the writers placed Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster in.

Gustin also took issue with some of the storylines introduced in later seasons and even revealed during the recent Comic Con Liverpool that he tried to talk the writers out of the forces storyline in The Flash Season 7.

“Calling the forces ‘my children’ . . . I tried to talk them out of that,” Gustin admitted (via DiscussingFilm). The actor also shared that he didn’t like the Godspeed lightsaber-style fight. “I was like . . . we can do this now? Really?” Gustin remarked, referencing the speedsters being able to conjure lightning lightsabers, a power that had never been mentioned or alluded to in the series before that episode.

Since wrapping up his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster, Gustin appeared in the 2023 romantic comedy film Puppy Love and headlined the 2024 Broadway musical Water for Elephants. While some DC fans remain interested in seeing Gustin return to the role of The Flash for James Gunn’s DC Universe, no plans for the superhero speedster have been shared yet by DC Studios. However, Gunn did address the fandom’s desire to see Gustin in more DC projects, writing on Threads in 2024, “Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project.”

All nine seasons of The Flash are currently streaming on Netflix.
