Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who voices Conquest in the Prime Video series Invincible, noted how “hard” the job was. Morgan previously acted opposite Steven Yeun, who voices Markus Sebastian “Mark” Grayson / Invincible, in The Walking Dead. In fact, Morgan’s character in that show, Negan, was the one who killed Yeun’s Glenn using a barbed baseball bat.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan says voicing Conquest was ‘physically hard’ in Invincible Season 3
Morgan reflected on his portrayal of Conquest in Invincible during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly and revealed it was physically challenging. “I don’t know what it is about being in a [recording] booth and trying to destroy the world,” he said. “But it’s really physically hard.”
Series creator Robert Kirkman told the same outlet that he had Morgan in mind for Conquest “probably since the beginning of the show’s existence.” Kirkland continued, “Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There’s a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that’s just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that.”
Conquest makes his debut in Invincible toward the tail end of Season 3 Episode 7, titled “What Have I Done?” After Mark’s fight with Invincibles from other universes and Angstrom, he is confronted by an aged Viltrumite. This is Conquest, who attacks Mark for failing to gain control over Earth. Just before the credits start rolling, Mark and Conquest rush towards each other for their inevitable battle.
Noting the meta aspect of the casting, Morgan humorously said, “I was just thrilled to get to be a part of it and give Steven his chance at redemption,” referring to how Negan killed Glenn in The Walking Dead.
He also spoke about the similarities between Negan and Conquest before explaining the difference between his approach to these characters. “I was trying to be aware of just voice inflection,” he stated. “It’s so easy for me to get into Negan mode after this many years.”
