Captain America 4: Sebastian Stan Addresses Possible Appearance in MCU Movie

It looks like Captain America: Brave New World will be the first installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sub-franchise to not feature Sebastian Stan‘s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier.

Stan first appeared as Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky Barnes, in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. He returned for 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which charted his exploits as the brainwashed assassin The Winter Soldier. He then appeared in Black Panther (2018) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the latter of which saw him reuniting with Steve Rogers to fight Thanos and his army. The character was dusted in the closing moments of Infinity War, but resurrected in Avengers: Endgame (2019), with his story continuing in the 2021 Disney+ limited series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The upcoming Captain America: Brave New World serves as a direct sequel to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, continuing from the series finale that saw Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson finally embracing the Captain America mantle. Although Stan has not been listed as part of the movie’s cast, fans have been wondering if the actor might still make a surprise appearance.

Unfortunately, a Bucky appearance in Brave New World looks unlikely, as Stan recently told Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast that he hasn’t shot a movie with Mackie in a while. “[Filming] Thunderbolts*, let me tell you, it was a much quieter year for me because I didn’t see Anthony Mackie. So, I’ll say that,” he remarked. “Although I miss Anthony Mackie like daily, and it’s something I don’t like to admit.”

Who is confirmed to appear in Captain America: Brave New World?

Besides Mackie, the cast for Brave New World includes Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross, among others.

In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson finds himself at the center of an international incident following the election of Thaddeus Ross as the president of the United States and must work to stop the true masterminds behind it.

Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters on February 14, 2025.
