Marvel’s The Eternals Adds Ma Dong-seok

The cast of The Eternals continues to take shape with another actor joining the movie’s roster of ancient superpowered beings. According to The Wrap, South Korean performer Ma Dong-seok is the latest addition to Marvel Studios’ enigmatic Phase Four entry.

Ma, who is occasionally credited under the name Don Lee, is primarily known for his work in Korean cinema. He received considerable attention in 2016 when he starred in Train to Busan, a zombie apocalypse thriller that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Although Ma attended college in the U.S. and speaks fluent English, The Eternals will mark his American film debut.

Not surprisingly, details surrounding Ma’s character in The Eternals are being kept a secret. So far, the film’s cast reportedly includes Angelina Jolie as Sersi and Kumail Nanjiani in another unspecified role. Chloe Zhao is directing the film from a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

Interestingly, Ma’s relationship with Marvel Studios dates back to at least 2017. In November of that year, The Korea Post reported that Marvel was courting the actor to appear in an unnamed film. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict forced him to decline their offer. It’s not clear if the studio was planning The Eternals that early or if they were looking at Ma for a role in a different film. Regardless, the fact that they’ve held onto his number after almost two years indicates great confidence in his acting ability.
