Details are starting to come up about what happened between the Executive Producer and the network. THR is reporting that series creator Robert Kirkman may have played a part. “Kirkman was one of several producers on the show who had issues with Mazzara and his vision,” they wrote. “I believe Robert wants to maintain a certain amount of his control,” said an unnamed insider “and AMC needs Robert for the fan base.” Kirkman is reportedly “very proprietary” about the comic’s translation to television.
Another source claimed the reason behind Mazzara’s departure was his “short comings” as a showrunner. They allege the problem became very clear in the second half of the season when production was shut down “several times” due to a lack of material.
We may never know for sure what happened between AMC and Glen Mazzara, but we certainly hate to see him leaving the series. The Walking Dead returns from hiatus on February 10.
