James McAvoy Offers X-Men: First Class Sequel Update

Earlier this month, SuperHeroHype reported that a Simon Kinberg had come aboard to draft a sequel to 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class. Today, iO9 caught up with the first film’s star, James McAvoy, to discuss his thoughts on another adventure in the Marvel Universe.

McAvoy revealed that he’s contracted for three films and that, while there’s decidedly not a rush, director Matthew Vaughn has an idea of where he’d like to take the franchise and he’s in the process of pitching it to 20th Century Fox.

“[Xavier] can’t just become the guy that we saw in the first three movies,” says McAvoy. “He just had two major things happen to him. He’s lost his best friend, essentially, and he’s just been paralyzed from the waist down. Which is just a huge, huge blow to his considerable ego. So he’s got to deal with that… You’ve got to deal with that, I don’t care if he’s a superhero and has brain powers or not, he’s just had a huge part of his physical life taken away from him, by someone he cares about more than anyone else. So he’s got to deal with that.”

McAvoy next voices the title character in Sony Pictures Animation’s Arthur Christmas, set for domestic release on November 23rd. He’s also slated to soon return to a different comic book world with the upcoming Wanted 2.
