Sony initially had planned to unite all their Spider-Man characters under one roof. Tom Holland recently confirmed that they had the idea to combine the Sony Spider-Man Universe and the MCU. However, the ambitious crossover never happened.
The British actor spoke about the long-rumored idea on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. He explained that the project was discussed for years but never moved beyond the planning stage. The actor said, “They had this plan to kind of merge the worlds at some point. And I think that they just never found the right time to do so. I think it was on the cards.”
He added, “There were never any battles of like ‘We want you to be in this movie,’ and ‘I don’t want to be in this movie.’ That never happened. It was just like, ‘We’ll get there.’ We just never got there. I think that was the idea. It was like, ‘One day this will happen.’ And like lots of things in the creative world, it just never came to fruition.”
His remarks coincide with repetitive hints and rumors from Sony executives about the potential crossover between Holland’s Spider-Man and other characters like Venom. While Spider-Man: No Way Home briefly connected the MCU and Sony’s universe through the multiverse, a full crossover between the Brit’s Spider-Man and Sony’s standalone heroes and villains never materialized.
Sony’s biggest Marvel experiments beyond Spider-Man
Sony started the live-action Spider-Man Universe with the release of Venom starring Tom Hardy. Later on, the franchise introduced movies like Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter. Instead of featuring Peter Parker, the movies centered on characters from the comics, mainly villains over heroes.
Although the films included many teases hinting at a connection with the MCU, the crossover never actually happened. After the release of Kraven the Hunter, Sony halted all plans regarding the live-action Spider-Man Universe. The studio made clear they would adopt a new strategy for future Marvel films while continuing to produce Spider-Man films with Tom Holland alongside Spider-Verse movies.
