A new casting rumor for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday movie has surfaced online, teasing the return of another beloved superhero. The fifth installment to the blockbuster franchise will premiere in theaters on December 18, 2026. It will then be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which will debut on December 17, 2027.
Who is potentially returning in Avengers: Doomsday?
The latest rumor comes from insider James Mack on X, who claims that Benedict Wong‘s fan-favorite character, Wong, will return in Avengers: Doomsday. His appearance will reportedly involve him stopping one universe from crashing into another, which would potentially highlight his powers as the MCU’s current Sorcerer Supreme.
After Stephen Strange disappeared due to Thanos’ snap, Wong ultimately assumed his role as the Sorcerer Supreme. He was able to retain the positive even after Stephen’s return. Wong was last seen by fans in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series. Besides Avengers: Doomsday, a previous report also suggested that the character might also lead the studio’s long-rumored Strange Academy series.
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Stephen McFeely writing the screenplay. The latest installment will feature the return of Avengers vets Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The ensemble cast will also include Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Lewis Pullman, Simu Liu, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Danny Ramirez.
The fifth Avengers installment will also feature the return of X-Men stars Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. Recent casting rumors suggested that Doctor Strange, Deadpool, Peggy Carter, and Spider-Man might also appear in Doomsday.
