A DC Universe movie that has been rumored for over a year just gained some major steam.
Which major superhero is rumored to be joining the DCU?
In February 2024, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn addressed a rumor that claimed there was an open casting call for Ruthye in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and that movies based on Teen Titans, Sgt. Rock, and Plastic Man were in development, with the latter to be directed by Darren Aronofsky. At the time, Gunn stated on Threads that “AT LEAST one of those things is not true. Have fun guessing!”
In the 20 months since that social media post, Ruthye has been cast in Supergirl and DC Studios has confirmed Teen Titans and Sgt. Rock movies are in development, making Plastic Man — or at the very least, Aronofsky’s involvement in the movie — the untrue rumor. Despite this, trusted scooper MyTimeToShineHello (via ComicBookMovie) is now reporting that a Plastic Man project is officially in development at DC Studios. No further details were shared at this time.
Created by Jack Cole, Plastic Man first appeared in Police Comics #1 in 1941. Originally owned by Quality Comics, the superhero, whose powers include being able to stretch and transform his body into virtually any shape, was acquired by DC Comics in 1956 and subsequently incorporated into its universe. While the comical hero has yet to appear in a live-action project, several actors are itching to take on the role, including The Office’s Rainn Wilson and Sonic the Hedgehog’s Ben Schwartz.
Gunn has proven that he can take lesser-known comic book characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker and turn them into household names, and Plastic Man would certainly fit that mold, especially since the filmmaker tried making a film based on the character 20 years ago. While DC Studios remains focused on reintroducing audiences to the DCU’s versions of Wonder Woman and Batman, it is also working on projects focused on less popular superheroes like Booster Gold, Mister Miracle, and the aforementioned Sgt. Rock.
The next DCU movie to hit theaters will be Supergirl on June 26, 2026, followed by Clayface on September 11, 2026.
