MCU’s Reset After Avengers: Secret Wars Won’t Be as Major as Some Thought

Marvel Studios‘ reboot plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe have reportedly been greatly exaggerated, according to trusted scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus.

Since the Multiverse Saga first began in 2021, there have been whispers that Marvel Studios was planning to softly reboot the MCU after Phase 6 ended. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the studio plans to reset the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, teasing back in July that the upcoming crossover movie will be about “beginnings.” Feige also clarified that the MCU would undergo a “reset,” not a “reboot,” explaining, “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.”

What will change in the MCU post-Avengers: Secret Wars?

Now, two months later, Perez has eased some fans’ worries over how large a reboot the MCU might undergo after Secret Wars, sharing that it won’t erase everything that happened before the Avengers movie. “It’ll just be a quick scrub of details the MCU wants to sort of forget and redo. This will involve the resurrection of some heroes and villains as well as the erasure of some minor events that bother fans (and Kevin Feige), but all in all, it will be like 75-80% the original timeline, with some minor changes,” Perez explained.

One major change that fans are expecting to see post-Secret Wars is a singular timeline that will consist of Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, with the latter two’s history likely being woven through the timeline to make it as if they were always part of the MCU. Perez’s hint towards resurrected heroes likely means that Iron Man will be brought back, even if Robert Downey Jr. isn’t in the role, and T’Challa will resume the mantle of Black Panther, although both of these remain unconfirmed at this time.

All will likely be revealed when Avengers: Secret Wars opens in theaters on December 17, 2027.
