Tangled Live-Action Remake Gets Surprising Update

A new update on the status of the Tangled live-action remake suggests that the movie’s chance of happening depends on the success of the next live-action Disney remake.

What is the latest Tangled live-action remake update?

According to a new report from noted insider Daniel Richtman (aka DanielRPK), the Tangled live-action remake’s chances of continuing in development hinge largely on the success of the planned Moana live-action remake.

Should Moana be a success, Richtman believes Disney will begin development again on Tangled. The last that we heard on the movie, it was being paused, and uncertainty was growing that the project would ever be made. However, likely following the massive success of the Lilo & Stitch remake, and with a potential successful film in Moana, it seems like Disney hasn’t given up hope yet.

While the movie was in development, the last we heard on Tangled was that The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey was directing the film, while Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder) is said to have written the most recent draft of the script. Kristin Burr and Lucy Kitada are also said to be attached to produce the film.

Originally released in 2010, Tangled is loosely based on the iconic tale of Rapunzel, first found in the collection of folktales from the Brothers Grimm. The story follows Rapunzel, a princess with magical blonde hair, as she escapes her tower with the help of the outlaw Flynn Rider. The two then embark on a rollicking romantic adventure.

The original film starred Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Tambor, Richard Kiel, M.C. Gainey, and Paul F. Tompkins. It was a massive hit for Disney, earning more than $590 million at the global box office and becoming one of the 10 highest-grossing films of 2010. Since its release, a short film and television series based on the project were also released.
