Although Robert Downey Jr. is also starring in Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Hemsworh’s Thor is still the only cast member from the original team who will be returning for the new Avengers movies since Downey is set to play a completely new character. The God of Thunder’s potential future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been teased in a new rumor circulating online.
Thor’s potential future in the MCU
According to an insider, Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to give Thor a proper send off in the upcoming Avengers movies, just like what they’ve done with Black Widow, Iron Man, and Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. However, the insider hinted that even if Thor will die in the Doomsday or Secret Wars, there’s still a possibility that his story will live on Valhalla, which was actually briefly shown at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder.
“Keep in mind, I said they wanted to give Thor a big, proper death in an Avengers movie. That does not automatically imply that Thor is gone forever. Let’s not forget, there’s still a place waiting for Thor at the end of it all,” Perez shared.
Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo from a screenplay written by Stephen McFeely. The latest installment will feature Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. as he signs on for the role of Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. The ensemble cast will also include MCU stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Mejia Huerta, Danny Ramirez, Simu Liu, Winston Duke, and Hannah John-Kamen. Most of them were recently spotted in Bahrain, confirming that the sixth Avengers movie will also be filming in other locations besides Pinewood Studios in England.
The sixth installment will also feature the return of X-Men stars Patrick Stewarta Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen‘s Magneto, Alan Cumming‘s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn‘s Mystique, James Marsden‘s Cyclops, and Channing Tatum‘s Gambit. Following the movie’s viral casting announcement video, Feige previously confirmed they haven’t really revealed the entire cast yet, teasing more casting announcements in the future.
Doomsday will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
