James Gunn Confirms DC’s Superman: Legacy Will Be Shot for IMAX

Superman: Legacy will be flying onto IMAX screens in 2025.

On Threads, James Gunn was asked if the upcoming DCU film Superman: Legacy will be filmed for IMAX. Gunn simply responded, “Yes.”

The question was posed in the replies to another Threads user’s question inquiring whether or not Batman will show in the forthcoming movie. “He can’t appear in Superman Legacy because he’s not in the script,” Gunn said.

Superman: Legacy will see David Corenswet play the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Sara  Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Superman: Legacy is getting ready to start filming

Written and directed by Gunn, Superman: Legacy begins filming in March 2024.

“I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes,” Gunn said on Threads earlier this month regarding Superman: Legacy’s production. “Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had we’d never make July 2025.”

Superman: Legacy will be the first official film entry in Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU; although, prior to that, an animated Creature Commandos series will be released earlier this year. Additional films are planned — including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Brave and The Bold, and movies featuring Swamp Thing and The Authority — though none of these projects have official release dates at this time.

The first phase of the DCU, which is titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, also includes multiple television series, such as Booster Gold and a Green Lantern-focused show, though those also do not have release dates at this time.

Superman: Legacy releases in United States theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025.
