Kari Skogland, who directed Marvel Studios‘ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for Disney+, has been tapped for the upcoming live-action film The Age of Legends, set in the universe of The Wheel of Time.
As reported by Deadline, Skogland will direct the first film in a planned trilogy that covers the history of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s high fantasy book series The Wheel of Time, set in an era long before the events of the books and their Prime Video TV adaptation. The Age of Legends will blend the fantasy elements with sci-fi, and is said to chronicle the fall of the world from a state of paradise to a time of conflict and catastrophe, as powerful leaders are corrupted by the evil force known as the Dark One.
The Wheel of Time weaves new projects into the Pattern
Zack Stentz, known for co-writing 2011’s Thor for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will provide the screenplay for The Age of Legends. Stentz is also writing the screenplay for The Wheel of Time’s animated YA film, The White Tower, which will be directed by Jay Oliva.
In addition to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Skogland’s credits include The Walking Dead and The Handmaid’s Tale. Regarding The Age of Legends, she said, “My vision is to honor the worldbuilding of Jordan’s masterwork, while peeling back the layers of legend and myth to reveal the flesh-and-blood characters underneath — flawed heroes and villains alike — ordinary people forced to make extraordinary choices as their world unravels.”
The Wheel of Time’s “present day” story, as shown in the novels and the TV adaptation, is set in a world where certain women have access to powerful magic and can join the feared and respected order of Aes Sedai. However, men with the same ability are doomed to mentally snap and endanger everyone around them, even the prophesied savior known as the Dragon Reborn.
The Wheel of Time Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Prime Video. The Age of Legends film does not yet have a release window announced.
