Taika Waititi Confirms He Will Not Direct Thor 5

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi revealed he will not be back in the director’s chair for a potential next Marvel Cinematic Universe installment.

While speaking to Business Insider to promote his latest movie, Next Goal Wins, Waititi addressed rumors about Marvel Studios moving on to a different direction for the next Thor sequel.

“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate,” Waititi said. “I know that I won’t be involved. I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”

Waititi brought his mixture of humor and wit to Chris Hemsworth‘s God of Thunder when he directed Thor: Ragnarok. Earning the best reviews of the Thor franchise, the movie grossed $865 million worldwide. However, the next installment, Thor: Love and Thunder, was less profitable and earned a polarized reception from audiences. A year after Love and Thunder’s release, Hemsworth told GQ he felt the movie went too far in its silliness.

“I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly,” Hemsworth said. “It’s always hard being in the centre of it and having any real perspective … I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.”

Is Taika Waititi open to return to the MCU?

While Thor 5 has not been officially announced by Marvel Studios, Waititi’s relationship with the studio remains positive enough for him to be open to returning to the MCU one day.

“I would never feel like they are cheating on me,” Waititi said. “We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is now streaming on Disney+.
