Why The Joker Was Present in Justice League’s Epilogue

One of the more mysterious parts of Zack Snyder’s Justice League was the epilogue, which featured Batman, Mera, Cyborg, and Deathstroke, Flash, and the Joker together in an apocalyptic wasteland. Since Batman and the Joker are enemies, viewers wondered what brought the duo together — a question Zack Snyder has now answered.

Why was the Joker with Batman in the Justice League epilogue?

When asked why Batman had to bring Joker with him as part of a Q&A session during SnyderCon 2023, Snyder gave a detailed answer. The director explained that the Joker had some important knowledge for the group which would help them take on the tyrannical Superman.

“Our theory is that he’s the one that knows where the Kryptonite — what shards of Kryptonite exist,” Snyder stated. “He has that information … so he’s basically made a deal with Batman. ‘Don’t kill me, and I’ll get you a tool to fight Superman.’ So he’s kind of stuck with him, in that way.”

Zack Snyder’s Justice League released in 2021 and served as a director’s cut of the 2017 Justice League movie since Joss Whedon replaced Snyder as director during the original’s post-production. The epilogue of the 2021 film showed Batman and his unlikely allies in the “Knightmare” future that was teased since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — a potential future in which Superman became a totalitarian ruler.
