The legend of Batman began with Bruce Wayne. However, it doesn’t end with him, and he may not have even been the first Batman. Deadline is reporting that HBO Max Latin America has ordered an animated feature called Batman Azteca. And as the name implies, the main character will be the Batman during the age of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. Batman Azteca animated.
According to the report, the main character’s name is Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy whose life is shattered when his father (and the leader of his village), Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Yohualli manages to escape and warn King Moctezuma about the invasion. Yohualli also journeys to the temple of the bat god, Tzinacan, where he trains with his mentor, Acatzin, to essentially become the Batman of his era. That training includes the development of specialized weapons that can defeat the Spanish and avenge Yohualli’s father.

The film will be produced entirely in Mexico, with a cast of Mexican actors. Juan Meza-León (Harley Quinn) will direct the movie, which will be produced by José C. García de Letona, Aaron D. Berger, Carina Schulze, and Fernando De Fuentes. Longtime Warner Bros. executive Sam Register will also executive produce the movie alongside Tomás Yankelevich. Historian Alejandro Díaz Barriga has also been recruited to ensure that the film’s depiction of its indigenous people “is appropriate and relevant.”
For now, there are no firm plans for Batman Azteca to be released on HBO Max. But it’s likely to happen at some point. A similar project, Batman Ninja, was created for the Japanese market in 2018. It was eventually brought to America as well, with an English dub that significantly changed parts of the story.
