Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit a major setback earlier this year when returning star Letitia Wright suffered injuries while filming a scene for the upcoming sequel. A spokesperson for Marvel initially downplayed the extent of the accident. However, Wright’s injuries later turned out to be serious enough for the film to suspend production until she made a full recovery. Now, a little over a month after the hiatus was announced, Wright is getting ready to go back to work. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, Wright will return to Wakanda Forever’s Atlanta set in January as expected.
The accident in question occurred during an overnight shoot in Boston back in August. Details about what happened are sketchy. But apparently, it involved a stunt rig gone wrong, after which Wright was taken to a local hospital. A subsequent report from Deadline revealed that Wright suffered a critical shoulder fracture and a concussion with “severe” side effects. Wright has been convalescing at her home in London since the accident took place.

Wright’s absence from the set forced the filmmakers to move up production on all other scenes not featuring her character, Shuri. It’s also worth noting that an earlier report from THR seemed to confirm that Wright is taking over for Chadwick Boseman as the new face of Marvel’s Black Panther franchise. As of last month, the studio remains committed to retiring the character of T’Challa following Chadwick Boseman’s death last year. But it’s still not clear how the film will address his character’s absence.
