Jake Gyllenhaal and Sam Hargrave Are Teaming Up on Rob Liefeld’s Prophet

We can officially add one more comic book adaptation to Jake Gyllenhaal’s busy schedule. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal will star in Studio 8’s long-gestating adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s Prophet. Additionally, Sam Hargrave has come aboard as the film’s director.

Studio 8 began developing a Prophet movie in 2018. And just last year, the studio hired longtime Arrowverse writer and producer Marc Guggenheim to pen the script. Liefeld originally introduced John Prophet in his creator-owned Youngblood series in the early ‘90s. In 1993, the character began starring in his own spinoff comic.

Similar to Liefeld’s stories, the movie will depict John as the subject of German science experiments near the end of World War II. After an explosion buries him alive, he awakens in 1965 to discover a completely different world. Not only does John’s long-lost daughter resent him; he must also deal with KGB agents who want to make new super-soldiers using his blood.

Both Gyllenhaal and Hargrave have experience in the comic book sphere. Aside from his turn as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, Gyllenhaal also recently signed on to headline and produce an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Oblivion Song for New Republic Pictures. Meanwhile, Hargrave has worked as a stunt coordinator or double on a number of Marvel movies, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Deadpool 2, and Avengers: Endgame. Last year, Hargrave made his directorial debut with Netflix’s Extraction and will also return to direct its recently-announced sequel.

“It’s been a goal of ours to work with Jake and Sam for quite some time,” said Studio 8 CEO Jeff Robinov in a statement. “So we’re very excited to finally be collaborating with them on this unique, action-packed genre film. I’m looking forward to seeing what they envision for bringing this story to life — a story we’re sure will stand out in the comic book world as a powerful, emotionally charged and visually distinctive film.”
