Alice Waddington Will Direct Dept. H For Netflix

Netflix is heading underwater for its next Dark Horse Comics adaptation. According to Deadline, Netflix has hired Alice Waddington to direct a new film based on Matt Kindt’s Dept. H.

Kindt originally launched Dept. H in 2016. The series follows Mia, the estranged daughter of a renowned scientist who works as a special investigator. When her father turns up dead in a deep-sea research station, Mia travels six miles below sea level to investigate the scene of the crime. Along the way, she encounters a multitude of suspects and an abundance of otherworldly creatures. Mia also discovers the shocking truth behind the station’s purpose.

Waddington previously made her feature directorial debut with Paradise Hills in 2019. Apparently, Netflix spent several months searching for a director to tackle Dept. H before she landed the gig. Deadline notes that Netflix considers the film a “high-priority” endeavor. Script-writing duties will fall to T.S. Nowlin, who wrote all three films in The Maze Runner franchise and also co-wrote Pacific Rim: Uprising in 2018.

Dept. H is the latest film that Netflix is developing under its first-look pact with Dark Horse, which was finalized in 2019 after the success of The Umbrella Academy’s first season. Netflix is also developing films and TV shows based on Mystery Girl, Lady Killer, and Grendel. Another film based on Polar was released in 2019. Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg and Paul Schwake will produce Dept. H through Dark Horse Entertainment.

Netflix still hasn’t announced a release date for Dept. H.
