The masked Psycho-class characters from Gearbox’s Borderlands video games have been the series’ mascots ever since the first installment hit consoles in 2009. So it makes sense for them to be prominently featured in Eli Roth’s upcoming film adaptation, and their ranks will include the towering monstrosity known as Krieg. According to Variety, Florian Munteanu has signed on to play this role in Roth’s movie.
Krieg actually didn’t make his first appearance until Borderlands 2 released its Psycho Pack DLC in 2013. Formerly a vault hunter, Krieg was kidnapped by the Hyperion corporation and subjected to countless experiments using slag. He was eventually able to free himself and kill his captors, but the experiments cost him his sanity. In Roth’s film, Krieg will be tasked with protecting Ariana Greenblatt’s Tiny Tina, a pre-teen explosives expert. This character also first appeared in Borderlands 2.
Munteanu originally made a name for himself as a heavyweight boxer nicknamed “Big Nasty” before he segued into acting. In 2018, he made his feature debut in Creed II as Viktor Drago, the son of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago. Later this year, Munteanu will also appear in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as Razor Fist.

“Florian brings real humanity and multiple layers to a character who on the surface seems totally insane and brutally savage,” Roth said in a new statement. “Krieg was by far the most difficult role to cast, and Florian brought him to life and grounded him in a way that I didn’t know was possible. He’s going to be a brilliant Krieg and will fit in perfectly with our incredible cast.”
Borderlands‘ cast also includes Kevin Hart as Roland, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis, and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap. Lionsgate still hasn’t set a release date for the movie.
