Zack Snyder Shares a New Look at Justice League’s Redesigned Steppenwolf

With Zack Snyder’s Justice League arriving next year, fans will finally get to see Darkseid in a big-budget DC movie. However, this doesn’t mean that his uncle, Steppenwolf, is getting pushed to the side. Ciaran Hinds will indeed reprise his role as Darkseid’s fellow New God when the Snyder Cut finally hits HBO Max, but he’ll appear as Snyder originally intended. Earlier today, Snyder gave fans a new glimpse at his design for the character, and it’s quite a departure from his appearance in Justice League’s theatrical cut. You can check it out for yourself (via Fandom) below.

Technically, this isn’t the first time fans have seen this version of Steppenwolf. He previously appeared in hologram form in the extended cut of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And back in August, Snyder also posted a different image that showed the alternate Steppenwolf from further away. But this new image gives us our best look yet at the director’s redesign.

Joss Whedon took over post-production duties for Justice League, and he made some pretty significant changes to the film’s overall tone and aesthetic. Several of these revolved around Steppenwolf’s appearance. Breaking with Snyder’s vision, Whedon gave the character a more “human” visage. Looking at the original design, it’s clear that Snyder wanted something more menacing.

Steppenwolf isn’t the only DC villain getting a makeover for the Snyder Cut. The new version of the film also features the return of Jared Leto as the Joker. Just last week, Snyder confirmed that the Clown Prince of Crime will look more “road-weary” this time around.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere as a four-part miniseries on HBO Max in 2021.
