Carrie Coon Says She Gets To Be a Ghostbuster in Afterlife

Next year, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will reunite the surviving stars of Ivan Reitman’s first two Ghostbusters films. However, Jason Reitman’s upcoming sequel will feature some new talent as well. The newcomers include Carrie Coon, who may be playing Egon Spengler’s daughter, or daughter-in-law in the movie. Afterlife is being hyped as a “passing of the torch” story concentrating on the next generation of paranormal investigators. Some fans may be skeptical by that take, and it turns out that Coon counted herself among those skeptics before joining the film.

Coon stars in Afterlife as Callie, the mother of Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor and Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe. Judging by the first trailer, the film will primarily focus on  Trevor and Phoebe. Fortunately, Coon will have plenty to do on her own, which is why she signed on in the first place. While speaking with Collider, Coon explained that she was initially hesitant to get involved with the project. Apparently, she was concerned about being typecast in typical mom roles.

“Yeah, that was certainly one of the things I was afraid of when I first was approached about it,” said Coon. “I think of Dee Wallace in E.T., who is a wonderful actress who then sort of became – well, she actually went on, had a really interesting life, but, you know, she became sort of the franchise mom. And I thought about that, but Jason is smarter than that. Jason is the next generation, and he wrote a lot of fun for all of us.”

“It was one of the reasons I said yes to it,” added Coon. “You know, she actually has a personality, a sense of humor, and she does get in on the action, and that was really fun for me! I mean, I’m a Ghostbuster basically, which is insane! I grew up with that movie!”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will hit theaters on March 5, 2021.
