J.K. Simmons Hints At Future Spider-Man MCU Movies

One of the biggest surprises in Spider-Man: Far From Home was J.K. Simmons’ cameo as J. Jonah Jameson in the mid-credits scene. Simmons first played Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. However, his return to the role was heavily requested by fans. Now, during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Simmons hinted that his time with Spider-Man is far from over. But it also depends on what Marvel and Sony want in the next film.

When asked whether fans should expect Jameson to return in Spider-Man 3, Simmons replied “I don’t know if I would use the word ‘expect.’ When we signed on for the first movie, we signed a contract to do two sequels as well. Which is always a one-sided…contract where you’re committed to do it, but they’re not necessarily committed to use your character in the ensuing movies. So it was great to have the opportunity [to return] as these things evolve, to be one of the holdovers from the previous version.”

Given the large role that Jameson plays in the Spider-Man comics, it’s difficult to imagine Simmons not returning for the next film. Additionally, Jameson exposed Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world. That has to be a major aspect of the sequel as well.

Simmons also revealed that Sony needed some convincing before agreeing to hire him for the original Spider-Man movie.

“The producers and the people at Sony, they needed to be convinced,” recalled Simmons. “Because obviously, there were a lot of much more high-profile actors that they had in mind that would help with the box office. It was very nerve-wracking.”

He then spoke about his audition scene opposite the Green Goblin.

“It included a scene where the Green Goblin breaks through the windows and picks me up by the throat, lifts me up in the air, and is strangling me,” said Simmons. “I’m holding the script pages, reading the scene on the audition, but then at the same time, trying to…pretending I’m being lifted by the neck and choked.”
