The New Mutants Gets a New Summer Release Date

It’s been a long road for The New Mutants, the last X-Men related film produced by 20th Century Fox. The film was finally slated to hit theaters last month, before the novel coronavirus pandemic forced theaters to close. However, Disney hasn’t given up on giving New Mutants a theatrical release. Now, the movie has its fifth release date.

Via Deadline, The New Mutants will now hit theaters on Friday, August 28. That’s assuming that theaters will be open by then; which is far from certain. Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal have recently lined up a few prominent films for direct-to-digital release. According to some reports, The New Mutants was spared from that fate because contracts with the cast would have to be reworked before that could happen.

Josh Boone directed and co-wrote The New Mutants; which is based on Marvel’s first X-Men spinoff title. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the film as Illyana Rasputin, with Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, and Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie. Blu Hunt also stars in the film as Danielle Moonstar, with Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa. Additionally, Alice Braga will portray Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The film’s story was inspired by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz’s Demon Bear Saga.
