It’s only been one day since Sony confirmed that Andy Serkis will step into the director’s chair for Venom 2. Regardless, fans are already curious about what drew Serkis to the sequel and how his vision will differ from Ruben Fleischer’s original film. Obviously, the movie is still in pre-production, so it’s still too early to reveal any concrete details. But this didn’t stop Serkis from offering a few soundbites while appearing at the Television Critics Association (via IGN).
The first Venom didn’t fare well with critics when it hit theaters last October. However, Serkis is confident that the next installment will be something special. Writer Kelly Marcel is still finalizing the movie’s screenplay, which apparently features extra contributions from Tom Hardy himself.
“It’s a fantastic franchise and I’m honored to be asked to direct it,” said Serkis. “It feels like a very contemporary story, and I think, hopefully, that it’s going to be an extraordinary piece of cinema.”
“I’ve known Tom for years, and admired him as an actor and a producer,” added Serkis. “And we’ve wanted to work together for years.”
Needless to say, it helps that Serkis also knows his way around a visual effects department. As an actor, Serkis has garnered acclaim for his motion capture performances as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series and Caesar in the recent Planet of the Apes films. Although Hardy revealed last summer that he didn’t wear a mo-cap suit to play Venom in the first film, that might change with Serkis in charge.
“I can’t tell you any ideas right now, I’m in the beginning stages, but I have some very clear ideas about what I want to see visually, and how we can take the characters to another dimension,” Serkis continued.
