The Mortal Kombat reboot film is finally gearing up for production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, martial artist and actor Joe Taslim is the first performer to be officially cast in the film. Taslim will play the iconic Sub-Zero, the Lin Kuei warrior with the power to manipulate ice. However, it’s unclear if Taslim will portray the first Sub-Zero, Bi-Han; or his brother Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero.
Taslim started his career as an actor with a role in The Raid. He went on to appear in Star Trek Beyond, Fast & Furious 6, and Netflix’s The Night Comes For Us. Taslim was also a member of Indonesia’s national Judo team.
The first Mortal Kombat film (from 1995) gave Sub-Zero and his rival, Scorpion, only minor roles in the narrative. Within the world of the games, both fighters have much bigger parts to play.
Aquaman director James Wan is executive producing the new Mortal Kombat. Commercial helmer Simon McQuoid is making his feature film directorial debut on the film. Greg Russo wrote the script, which will once again assemble a wide variety of characters for an otherworldly tournament that will determine the fate of the Earth.
New Line recently gave Mortal Kombat a release date on March 5, 2021; which is directly opposite Sony’s Masters of the Universe reboot. Chances are good that one of those films will move from that date.
