Hellboy Reboot Coming To Blu-Ray In July

Lionsgate is ready to bring the fire to Hellboy fans everywhere this summer. The studio has announced a home video release for its reboot, featuring Stranger Things’ David Harbour in the title role. The film will release first on Digital HD format on July 9, with a traditional home media release (Blu-Ray, Ultra HD 4K Blu-Ray) on July 23.

Along with standard releases of the film, Lionsgate will also team up with retailers to offer limited edition Steelbook releases. Perhaps the most noteworthy is the one being offered by Best Buy. It features an exclusive Steelbook layout by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, a throwback to his classic comic book design.

For those that prefer a more contemporary design, Wal-Mart and Target will offer their own double-sided Steelbook cases. Both feature Harbour’s Hellboy character in battle poses, with his rock fist clearly in view. Walmart will also offer a free digital copy of the Hellboy digital graphic novel The Wild Hunt with purchase. You can see them below.

The studio noted in a press release, “Take home Hellboy and delve into his world with exclusive special features, including a three-part documentary, never-before-seen deleted scenes, and more! Experience four times the resolution of full HD with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, which includes Dolby Vision HDR, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality.”

Lionsgate probably has hopes that the film will catch fire on the home video market after a somewhat lackluster box office performance. When it debuted back in April, Hellboy ended up only making $21 million domestic against a $50 million budget. In a recent interview, Harbour noted “major problems” behind-the-scenes. “I did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately I’m not in control of a lot of those things.”

There’s a good chance that the film could have a second life on home video, but time will tell.
