Captain Marvel Breaks Wonder Woman’s Box Office Record

While Avengers: Endgame broke all of the records this past weekend, Captain Marvel broke one of her own. Thanks to a bump from Endgame, Captain Marvel earned approximately $8 million, which puts its domestic total at $413.5 million. That’s just enough to pass Wonder Woman as the top grossing solo superheroine movie in the North American market.

Wonder Woman set the previous record, $412.5 million, in the summer of 2017. At the time, it dispelled the myth that audiences wouldn’t show up for a superheroine led film. Wonder Woman went on to take $821.8 million worldwide, which has also been surpassed by Captain Marvel‘s $1.1 billion.

This weekend also marks the first time that Marvel Studios took both the 1st and the 2nd spots at the domestic box office. Endgame is likely to retain the top slot for its second weekend, while Captain Marvel could drop back down. Endgame was clearly responsible for Captain Marvel‘s rise from #6 two weeks ago, and #4 last weekend. Regardless, the Brie Larson-fronted film was already a massive box office success.

Marvel has yet to reveal any Captain Marvel sequel plans, but a follow up is clearly inevitable. Larson’s Captain Marvel had a relatively small role in Endgame, but she will likely return for any Avengers sequels as well.
