Who Is Cynthia von Doom? Avengers: Doomsday’s Coffee Easter Egg Explained

Marvel fans are wondering who Cynthia von Doom is and how she is related to Doctor Doom. After the character’s name popped up in a recent Avengers: Doomsday promotional campaign, many want to know whether the character will play an important role in the film.

Here are all the details about the character.

Months ahead of Avengers: Doomsday‘s release later this year, Marvel has begun promoting the film. Recently, the studio teamed up with a local London coffee shop, which is now selling Latveria-themed products. For the uninitiated, Latveria is a fictional place and Doctor Doom’s home country.

The cafe, Flying Horses Coffee, which is temporarily called Dom Latveria Coffee, is offering several drinks named after people from Latveria. One of the most notable ones is Cynthia’s Blend, which has caught the attention of many people. It might be a name that many new Marvel fans might not have heard of, especially when the character has not appeared in any of the Fantastic Four films.

Cynthia, aka Cynthia von Doom, is Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom’s witch mother. She was born into a Romani clan in Latveria and later married Werner von Doom, a doctor. The couple then had their son, Victor. After years of oppression under Latveria’s Baron, Cynthia wanted to free her country’s people. To achieve that goal, she made a pact with Mephisto to give her the magical powers to kill the Baron and his men. In exchange, she offered her soul.

However, Mephisto manipulated the agreement. As a result, Cynthia’s actions brought on the unintended deaths of innocent people. After she eventually died, Mephisto captured her soul.

Victor then grew up determined to free his mother’s soul. He became obsessed with mastering both science and sorcery. Combining both, he attempted to create a device that could talk to departed souls. Despite Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic’s warning, Victor used the device. However, it went terribly wrong, and the device exploded in his face, permanently disfiguring him. This is one of the main reasons for the rivalry between the two.

This is the most prominent version of the story. There are a few more versions, including one where Victor teams up with Doctor Strange to confront Mephisto in Hell. So, it remains to be seen which version of Avengers: Doomsday will feature, if at all. But no matter what direction the film takes, it adds significant emotional depth to the villain.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
