Leo Bonhart killed all members of The Rats, which also includes Ciri’s partner Mistle, in The Witcher Season 4 finale.
This development follows the previous episode’s shocking deaths, including Vesemir, who fell in battle against Vilgefortz, and Istredd, who sacrificed himself. Margarita, aka or Margarit, also perished during the fierce Battle of Montecalvo.
Vesemir, Margarita, and Istredd lay dead following the aftermath of Montecalvo’s fall. Meanwhile, the Rats, who lived a brave life robbing tax collectors and nobles, faced tragedy too. Leo Bonhart, the bounty hunter, was sent to massacre them. He first tries to trick them and attacks them one by one. He moves in silence, giving them no opportunity to escape. While all The Rats died, Mistle survived.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich earlier reflected on the horror Ciri witnessed and what it represents for her as a character. “It represents a loss of innocence, but of course, I think a lot of people would say the Rats aren’t exactly innocent. That’s what makes them perfect Witcher characters,” she said. (via Time)
In another interview with GameRadar+, Hissrich also addressed major deaths this season. She also acknowledged that the changes from books are intentional and are for a reason. “One of the things that our characters have to deal with is the trauma of losing someone and how that changes who you are and how you view the world. And there are several deaths this season that I think are unexpected and they change our characters in very different ways,” she explained.
