How The Conjuring Last Rites Smashed Global Box Office Records This Weekend

Even experts are blown away by The Conjuring Last Rites box office numbers in its opening weekend. The most optimistic projections for the Warner Bros. horror film’s debut had it earning around $64 million in the United States while traditional tracking believed that it would get upwards of around $80 million overseas. But the results are in, and these projections for both the domestic and international box office numbers for The Conjuring 4 are shockingly off. In fact, the only prediction that has held is that The Conjuring Last Rites has indeed smashed records for The Conjuring Universe and horror films in general.

What are The Conjuring Last Rites weekend box office results?

The opening weekend box office results for The Conjuring Last Rites have it earning $187 million globally, which combines its $83 million domestic number and $104 million international number.

These figures come from Deadline, which mentions that for a horror film it already leads the way as having the biggest opener internationally and the second largest opener globally. Compared to the original projection of $80 million for the film’s global weekend results, the actual $187 million is more than double that.

In particular, The Conjuring Last Rites topped the charts throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia, having the biggest debut for a horror film in Spain, Chile, Brazil, Norway, Poland, and India. Here are some exact figures for the movie’s international box office results:

  • Brazil – $7.7 million
  • India – $6.7 million
  • Indonesia – $5.6 million
  • Mexico – $13.3 million
  • United Kingdom – $8.8 million

It should also be noted that The Conjuring 4 hasn’t even opened yet in other territories yet, like France, Belgium, Vietnam, and The Middle East. The movie is set to release in those countries next week, so it’s expected that the film will continue its dominance at the global box office for at least another week.

Domestically, the $83 million opener is impressive as well. It was difficult to track just how much the film would make during the lead-up to its September 5 release in the States. In early August, sites like BoxOfficeTheory only expected the movie to make around $27 million but that was raised week by week until it reached the $64 million mark (which was still too low). The reason why its performance seems so unpredictable is due its presence on social media and aggressive marketing campaign, which banked on the fact that The Conjuring 4 would be the last time we would see the Warrens paranormal investigators.

Even during the weekend debut for The Conjuring Last Rites, Deadline was surprised by the film’s performance every day. On Friday, September 5, it reported that the movie’s $8.5 million preview on Thursday had set a record for a Conjuring movie but stuck with its $50M domestic prediction until it was raised to $65M later in the day. It noted that for Thursday the movie was tracking well with the 18-34 demographic (69%) and was a huge hit for Latino and Hispanic audiences (at 44%). Its box office performance was also propelled by the movie being showcased at all premium screens and IMAX.

Then on Saturday, September 6, this figure was increased yet again to $75M, which was already a strong indication that the film was overperforming beyond every expert’s predictions. This was before the actual result of $83 million came in on Sunday, showing just how strong The Conjuring franchise can be in theaters when it isn’t restricted to streaming during the COVID pandemic.

The digital release date for The Conjuring Last Rites is expected to be late October or early November, while its streaming release date for HBO Max will likely be within two months (and hopefully before Halloween).
