Why Freakier Friday Could Beat Weapons at the Box Office

Disney’s Freakier Friday is aiming for the top of the box office for its opening weekend, with projections saying that it could overtake Weapons and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. That’s fairly surprising for a comedy, a genre that typically doesn’t fare well at theaters (as opposed to streaming). Also, one report predicted that Weapons actually has the edge over Freakier Friday when it comes to the domestic 3-day weekend from August 8 to August 10. But another analysis surprisingly has it the other way around.

What is the latest opening weekend box office prediction for Freakier Friday?

The latest box office prediction for Freakier Friday has it earning somewhere between $35 million and $45 million for its opening weekend domestically.

These numbers comes from an August 6 report from BoxOfficePro, which are relatively higher than usual. Another August 6 report from Box Office Theory has it earning a much lower $29-36 million instead, with traditional industry tracking saying that it will earn over $25 million. That’s a fairly wide spread when it comes to Freakier Friday’s projections.

Several factors are in the movie’s favor. In particular is Jamie Lee Curtis, which BoxOfficePro says “has experienced a renaissance” given her appearances in Knives Out and Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Another is Lindsay Lohan, which has had a resurgence in rom-coms on Netflix, and the fact that both actresses appeared in the 2003 Freaky Friday. While there might be too many films trying to bank on nostalgia lately, Freakier Friday caters to multi-generational female audiences, which has a tendency to be underserved at the box office.

Box Office Theory has the movie tracking toward $3.5 million in previews. There’s a danger that the film’s audience is mostly fans of the original movie, so we’ll have to see its appeal with the general “mom and daughter audience” holds throughout the month.

Marcus Theaters is offering a special Freakier Friday popcorn bucket as a collectible. For those who don’t have time to watch it in theaters, it is expected to be on Disney Plus later this year.
