Some Marvel fans are looking for how the Fantastic Four 2025 box office numbers compare to past Fantastic Four movies, particularly the ones in 2005 and 2015 by Twentieth Century Fox. The latest Fantastic Four reboot directed by Matt Shakman has only been out for two weeks, so it’s admittedly early to see whether the movie will be a greater commercial success.
Looking at its box office performance so far, Fantastic Four 2025 has indeed overtaken its 2005 and 2015 counterparts when it comes to some of the raw totals, but that doesn’t take inflation into account. This is an important factor to consider, as we noted in our box office comparison between Superman 2025 and Man of Steel. So let’s delve into the numbers to see how much The Fantastic Four: First Steps will need to make before it can assume the title of being the most successful Fantastic Four film to date.
Has the Fantastic Four 2025 box office numbers beaten Fantastic Four 2005’s or 2015’s?
The box office numbers for Fantastic Four 2025 has beaten those for the 2015 film, but they have not yet overtaken those for 2005 film when adjusting for inflation. However, it’s still on track to do just that over its presumed three-month run in theaters.
By August 5, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has earned $197 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. (We’ll use domestic sales across the US and Canada to make sure that the comparisons are fair.) Meanwhile, Fantastic Four 2005 earned a total of $154.6 million, which is roughly $254.6 million in today’s money after taking inflation over the last 20 years into account.
For completeness, that film’s sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, that released in 2007 had total domestic sales of $131.9 million, which is approximately $204 million in 2025. Not unexpectedly at the bottom of the heap is Fantastic Four 2015, which had the infamous domestic box office flop of $56.1 million, or $76.1 million in 2025.
This means that Fantastic Four 2025 will need to rake in an additional $57 million in domestic sales to break the domestic box office record for Fantastic Four films. That shouldn’t be too difficult given that the movie still has a few more weeks in IMAX and other premium screens and has more than two months in US theaters overall.
Comparing the international box office numbers is more difficult, since the inflation rate differs for every country. Still, if we focus on the UK market, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has so far amassed a solid $20.5 million (when we convert it from British pounds). That’s still short of the $23.1 million, which would be about $40.9 million in 2025, that the 2005 film made. The 2015 movie made only $8.87 million, or $12.2 million. So as far as these two countries are concerned, it’s pretty much the same story.
Unfortunately, The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a significant dip over its second week, dropping by 66% in sales to $44 million at the domestic box office. This is despite the fact that the film is easily the most well-received Fantastic Four film, both by critics and audiences, to date.
Some analysts suggest that this is due to the Fantastic Four brand not being a top-tier Marvel movie franchise (because of the 2005 and 2015 movies), though it has received top billing this year in comparison to Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* this year. The movie also had to compete against Superman 2025, The Bad Guys 2, and The Naked Gun, and it will soon need to face off against Freakier Friday and Weapons that releases on August 8.
