Why The Sandman Season 2 Is Last & Season 3 May Not Happen

Despite the positive update from writer and showrunner Allan Heinberg, The Sandman will most likely not return for a third season on Netflix. Seeing the show’s acclaim and popularity, it is hard to see why The Sandman Season 3 won’t happen, even though Season 2 was announced as the last. But why? Here is the explanation.

Here’s why The Sandman Season 3 likely won’t happen

It was confirmed earlier that the second season would bring The Sandman series to a close. The series worked out very well. But Netflix decided to conclude the series due to the allegations of sexual misconduct against Neil Gaiman, the author whose work the series is based on.

Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by a former babysitter. As many as eight women stepped up to accuse the famed author. Two of the women who accused Gaiman worked for him in the past, and five were reportedly his fans. (via Vulture)

Though Allan Heinberg told TV Insider that he wrote the series in a way that would keep the option for a third season open, he previously discussed ending the series with the second season in an interview with Variety.

“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” he had said. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show,” he added.

The Sandman is not the only show that is suffering this fate due to the allegations against Neil Gaiman. Dead Boy Detectives was also canceled, and Good Omens also wrapped up hurriedly.

The Sandman Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
