Cars 3 director Brian Fee was unsure about a fourth film. He stated in 2017, “I don’t know. I’m not sure. I actually don’t know the future of the franchise. I don’t know where we’ll go after that. I don’t know if we’ll make one. If we do, will it be more McQueen? This is the third act but I don’t know how many acts he has in his life. On the other hand, Jay Ward, the creative consultant of the franchise, appeared positive on The Late Brake Show in 2023. “There are more Cars things brewing, I can’t say much more yet. ‘Cars’ has got a life that will keep going. I am working on some real fun projects right now that you will see in a couple of years. It takes us a while to make them,” he said.
If Cars 4 indeed happens, Owen Wilson is expected to reprise his voice role of Lightning McQueen, along with several others.
