Fans are wondering where the famed city of Metropolis from the Superman universe is located. James Gunn’s Superman has now answered this burning question. Many may have missed this small detail in the film that confirmed where Metropolis was located.
So, here’s everything we know about DCU’s Metropolis location.

Where is DCU’s Metropolis in located in the US in Superman?
The small detail that gives away the location of Metropolis in the new Superman is Lois Lane’s car’s license plate. The Delaware license plate indicates that Metropolis is indeed located in Delaware, as was also the case for the comic version of the city.
Before the 1970s, the DC universe did not explicitly place its fictional cities in any grid. But there was a push in the 1970s for greater narrative and geographical consistency. In 1977’s The Amazing World of DC Comics #14, DC placed Metropolis in Delaware and Gotham across the bay in New Jersey.
Paul Kupperberg solidified the link with Gotham in World’s Greatest Superheroes, which also shed light on the dynamic between Metropolis and Gotham, two cities, quite close but poles apart from each other.
Crisis on Infinite Earths made the locations canon, and now DCU has also hinted at the big Delaware connection (via ComicBook.com).
What city is Superman’s Metropolis based on?
Previous Superman movies have likened Metropolis to New York, and most adaptations also liken the city to the Big Apple. At least, that has been the most common depiction so far. Geographically, it is in Delaware, and it could also draw inspiration from there, too. There are often variations of the same. Zack Snyder’s version more closely resembled Chicago than New York.
But at least, James Gunn’s Superman withholds the comic accuracy by placing Metropolis in Delaware. As the city is fictional, there will always remain a bit of ambiguity about it.
Superman is now playing in the theatres.
