From the Set of X-Men: Days of Future Past

“I think they always understood that the X-Men universe is every bit as exciting and large and potentially fruitful as the remaining Marvel Universe.”

“There is this big, open time frame between ‘First Class’ and ‘Days of Future Past’ and the original actors,” Simon Kinberg said. “So there’s this still 30-year period where we can fill in a lot of the blanks and show how, even after this movie, they still evolve from where Charles and Erik and Raven and Hank end this film to the ones we meet 30 years later.”

Singer mentioned that since “Days of Future Past” brings the “First Class” cast into the ’70s – perhaps a follow-up could lead them into the next decade.

“I think for me it’s very much a time line issue, there’s certain things I’d like to see, it’s not necessary but I’d like to see us move into the next decade. The ’70s is great, it would be great to take it into the next decade. The ’80s would be fun to meet some familiar characters when they’re very young, maybe get to see how other characters besides Xavier and Magneto came to be and got their start. So that’s something I personally would like to explore, just as someone who has worked with those characters in other films, the earlier films.”

Since the success of Marvel’s The Avengers, every studio has been clambering to get their own interwoven and gargantuan franchise off the ground. Marvel themselves is gearing up for Avengers: Age of Ultron in addition to setting up their “phase 3,” Warner Bros. is prepping Batman vs. Superman, and Sony has two “Spider-Man” sequels and two spin-offs in developments. Where does that leave Fox?  Rest assured, they’re trying to think of a way to make the “Marvel method” work for their characters.

“There’s no question that the Marvel model has influenced and inspired them,” Kinberg said about Fox. “We approached this movie from the standpoint of what to do with the universe rather than what to do with the story. We talked about other Marvel properties at Fox and talked a lot about what the future stories would be, whether they followed the cast in the future or the cast in the past and they’re all about trying to do what Marvel’s done and create different platforms for different stories.”

“It was something I’d be thinking about in the last week or so, because I’d just had a bunch of thoughts about something,” Singer revealed. “You know, as you’re shooting an idea pops in your head or you have a conversation about another universe and you start thinking, ‘Oh wouldn’t it be interesting to see these.’”

Whatever the future holds for the X-Men, even as the steps are taken to gear up production on a follow-up, the focus for the time being is very much on delivering X-Men: Days of Future Past to a very eager audience.

“At the risk of being too bold,” Hutch Parker told us. “We definitely feel like we’re on to something and that this is going to be a very special film.”

X-Men: Days of Future Past will debut in wide release on May 23, 2014.
