With Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 newly started, it is an auspicious time for Marvel to start a new comic centered around the Man Without Fear. It is also a good time to introduce a new villain, one who proves shockingly capable of besting Matt Murdock in combat.
Written by Stephanie Phillips, with art by Lee Garbett, Daredevil #1 sets up a new status quo for Matt Murdock. The previous volume of the Man Without Fear’s solo series took him far afield from his usual beat. Matt spent more time fighting literal demons than street crime and was cut off from his usual supporting cast.
The new series finds Matt starting a new life as a professor of law at Empire State University. His ready acceptance into the faculty has already earned him one enemy among the college’s teaching staff. Daredevil makes a new enemy who beats him in a fight as well. This defeat follows the sinister warning “Tell Matthew Murdock that I have seen his future… and he will die!”
What do we know about the new Daredevil villain?
The advance press for the new Daredevil series reveals the mystery villain’s name is Omen. However, the issue synopses are as vague as the prophecies that Omen spouts. He claims to experience visions of the future. However, this claim seems to be proven by the fact that Omen can counter Matt’s attacks before he begins to move.
Beyond that, we know little beyond Matt not recognizing Omen’s voice. However, the opening scene suggests that Omen might be connected to The Hand, the clan of ninjas that are among Matt Murdock’s most frequent enemies. In his first prophecy in the book’s prologue, Omen says “The Hand that offers Peace may strike first.” He then ominously adds “He who looks without sight will see too much.”
